Elizabeth of Hungary

Elizabeth of Hungary
(1207–31)
   Saint and Monarch.
Elizabeth was the daughter of King Andrew of Hungary and she was married, at the age of fourteen, to King Ludwig IV of Thuringia. Her husband died in 1227 and she moved to Marburg where she became a member of the Franciscan Tertiary Order. Under the spiritual direction of Conrad of Marburg, she led a life of extraordinary asceticism, dedicating herself to the care of the sick and the poor. After her death, the Elizabethskirche, Germany’s first Gothic cathedral, was built at Marburg to house her relics. She was canonised in 1235.
